AbstractThis study medium-scale gravity waves were investigated using more than one airglow layer. The observations were conducted of São João do Cariri (7.4°S; 36.5°W) from 1998 to 2013. A wave analysis technique was used that involved creating keograms in the direction of propagation of the gravity wave and determining the phase propagation of the waves through multiple airglow layers. This approach made it possible to investigate the vertical and horizontal parameters (period, wavelength and phase speed) of medium-scale gravity waves. A total of 38 wave events were investigated. The periods covered a range of 40 to 80 min, with the majority of horizontal wavelengths lying between 140 and 290 km, while the horizontal phase velocity predominantly varied from 50 to 80 m/s. The vertical wavelengths were concentrated in the range of 70 to 280 km, and the vertical phase velocities between 20 and 50 m/s. Furthermore, the analysis of the vertical phase allowed us to infer that 66% of the waves demonstrated upward phase propagation, indicating a decrease in energy. These results suggested that many of the sources of this gravity wave spectrum could be above the airglow layers and/or there are expressive conditions to create turn levels in the lower thermosphere, which could produce reflection of the gravity waves and increase the number of the gravity waves propagating downward.
